Silver Lake Reservoir south dam path to open February 10.

With water back in the Silver Lake Reservoir, Los Angeles residents will soon get a new vantage point from which to view the lake and its surroundings.

On February 10, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will open a walking path on the south dam of the reservoir, according to an announcement from Councilmember Mitch O’Farrell (the council office and LADWP are planning an opening celebration for the big day).

The path isn’t new, but for years it had been closed off to the public when the lake was connected to the city’s water storage network. Now that the reservoir has been taken offline, officials are willing to let the public a little closer to the water.

On the other hand, ambitious plans to turn the reservoir and the area around it into a public green space free of fencing and concrete siding appear stalled for the time being.

What the reservoir will become now that it’s no longer needed for drinking water storage remains to be seen.

LADWP, which still manages the lake, plans to work with the city’s bureau of engineering on a master plan for the reservoir that will help guide its development and maintenance in the future.

In the meantime, residents can stroll along the new south dam trail from morning to dusk, according to the Silver Lake Neighborhood Council.
